According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle users are “overrepresented” in fatality statistics related to accidents. Despite decreases in recent years, motorcycle accidents still kill thousands of American individuals each year. Unfortunately, one such fatality recently occurred near La Jolla Shores Beach following a serious collision that caused a motorcyclist to be ejected into oncoming traffic that did not have time to stop.
A 19-year-old man lost his life in a motorcycle accident, which occurred in the early afternoon hours along Torrey Pines Road. San Diego police say the man unexpectedly lost control over his bike, veering into the divider that separates the north and southbound sections of the road. The impact jettisoned the rider into the oncoming traffic lanes, where he was struck soon after by the driver of an SUV. The man died before he could be taken to a hospital.
Police say their investigation remains ongoing, and it is unclear what caused the driver of the motorcycle to lose control. Authorities did not mention if they suspected alcohol was a factor, and the driver of the Acura SUV was not charged due to the unfortunate incident. Other details, such as whether the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet or other protective gear, were not available.
