OCEANSIDE, CA – Two people were hurt when a suspected impaired driver crashed into a parked police car on the 1200 block of Vista Way Tuesday, according to NBC San Diego.
Jonathan Shipp Sr., 35, was driving a Kia Optima west on Vista Way at excessive speeds when he collided with a parked patrol vehicle occupied by one officer.
The collision propelled the patrol vehicle over fifty feet and caused the suspect’s vehicle to catch on fire.
The officer exited his vehicle to help rescue Shipp Sr. from his car. A resident assisted the officer with extricating Shipp Sr. with a crowbar.
Emergency responders transported Shipp Sr. and the officer to an area hospital with non-life-threateningies.
Investigators believe Shipp Sr. appeared to be intoxicated and found alcohol bottles inside his vehicle. Authorities arrested Shipp Sr. for suspicion of felony driving under the influence with injury. Shipp Sr. was already on probation for driving under the influence at the time of his arrest.
The incident is under investigation by the Major Accident Investigation Team of the Oceanside Police Department.
