LA MESA, CA – An 18-year-old man died Saturday after losing control of his car and crashing into a police cruiser on the interstate in La Mesa, reports Fox 5 San Diego.
The incident happened around 11:47 a.m. west of Baltimore Drive on the westbound side of Interstate 8.
The investigation indicates that a westbound 2014 black Nissan Sentra collided with the rear of a police vehicle. An officer with the California Highway Patrol had parked along the interstate to respond to two other collisions in the area.
The officer was unhurt, but the driver of the Nissan died after transport to a local hospital. Authorities identified the victim as Eugene Nelson of El Cajon.
Police say that both the victim’s speed and wet road conditions were factors in the accident.
A full investigation is underway.
