On June 17th, 2026, a USD student was struck by a police vehicle on Linda Vista Road near Goshen Street. The man was taken to the hospital but sadly passed away in the early morning hours. The police department has stated that the officer felt an impact and stopped, discovering a young man lying in the street. The tragedy of this situation is deepened by friends and locals questioning exactly what happened.
While this case was initially treated as an unfortunate car accident, police have now ruled it as a suicide. The claim is that the victim intentionally stepped into the road when he saw the vehicle approaching. However, many fellow students and neighbors have told news outlets that the stretch of road where the collision occurred is notoriously dangerous. Residents of the area say it’s normal for an accident to occur there at least once a month.

The SDPD has not yet released information about the police officer driving the vehicle. Now that the devastating collision is no longer being treated as an accident, social media users, friends, neighbors, and other USD students are demanding answers. The fact is that the area has no marked crosswalks, no traffic lights, and poor lighting. So who is responsible?
Who Can Be Held Liable?
In this case, there are three main parties who may be at fault. First, the student himself, who is now said to have ended his own life. Second, the police officer driving the vehicle and the larger SDPD as his employer. Third, the San Diego governing body. In California, pedestrians are required to exercise reasonable care and not leave sidewalks without being sure that it’s safe to enter the road.
At this time, the police department has not shared any details about how fast the officer was driving, whether they were distracted at the time of the collision, or if they were under the influence of any substances. There is a general lack of faith in law enforcement because people feel they rarely face justice. As a result, many online commenters are accusing the SDPD of covering up the true cause of the crash.
Regarding the road itself, neighbors have stated that the stretch is notoriously dangerous due to the lack of pedestrian infrastructure. According to ABC 10 News, this area has been on the city’s radar and has been identified as an “improvement area” to make the road safer for students, who cross there frequently. The city can be considered at least partially responsible for the death due to the delay in making necessary changes.
Can the Family Sue for Wrongful Death?
If they choose to pursue legal action, the victim’s family can file a wrongful death lawsuit against the SDPD and the city. There is no way of knowing what the man’s mental state was at the time of the crash, so the argument can be made that he took his own life. However, if the family claims that their son was not suicidal and that he left no note or message, the investigation must proceed. To prove wrongful death, the family and their legal counsel will need to gather evidence, which should include as many of the following as possible:
- Video footage from the surrounding area
- Witness testimony
- Testimony from friends and family regarding the man’s mental health
- Photos of the vehicle damage patterns
- A timeline of previous crashes in the same area
- The autopsy report
- Statements from the physicians who treated the victim before his death
To avoid liability, the city must prove that there were imminent plans to improve the area, that the changes weren’t made due to a lack of funds, and that there wasn’t sufficient time to make improvements from the date they should have reasonably known about the danger. For the police department to be absolved of liability, it must prove that the officer was not driving recklessly.
This situation is tragic and complex, with accusations shifting from the victim to the police and the city. A thorough investigation must take place to resolve this case. Because the SDPD has already ruled the case as a suicide after only a brief investigation, people are highly suspicious. While people around the world are invested in the outcome of this case, we will only receive specific answers if the family decides to take legal action.
