In 2019, HHJ Trial Attorneys posted a story about our client Maria Palacios.
“Maria’s son, Ivan Ortiz, was found dead in his jail cell this past March. Ivan suffered from mental health issues and was supposed to be on suicide watch. Maria came to our office asking for help because she has been left in the dark about her son’s death. We will get answers.”
After two years of fighting, our personal injury attorneys forced the County to take responsibility for Ivan’s death with a settlement of 1 million dollars. The Sheriff’s Department changed their procedures and stopped giving plastic bags to inmates on suicide precautions. We hope that this is the first of many changes the County will make to protect our mental health population. Although we cannot bring back Maria’s son, this is a good start to her and her family’s recovery.
