Encinitas, CA: A tragic traffic accident left an Encinitas man dead on the morning of November 28.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s department, the cyclist was attempting to make a crossing when a vehicle turning right collided with him, apparently causing severe injuries. Several individuals nearby worked to provide first aid until paramedics arrived to transport the injured man to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injuries following arrival at the hospital.
Police do not believe alcohol was involved, and it is unclear whether the vehicle turning had the right of way. An investigation remains ongoing, and police did not disclose an age or a name for the victim.
Unfortunately, such accidents on our streets are not uncommon in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are nearly 1,000 traffic fatalities involving cyclists every year. There are many more accidents between automobile drivers and cyclists that do not result in death but do cause serious injury. An injured cyclist could face severe consequences from the accident, including significant changes in quality and enjoyment of life. The resulting medical bills may also be substantial.
